Healthcare Commission

Healthcare Commission
an independent organization established in 2004 and responsible for promoting improvement in the quality of health care in England (it has a limited role in Wales); it replaced the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI; set up in 1999). The responsibilities of the Commission include publication of national health-care standards; annual assessment of the performance of NHS organizations; reviewing other (i.e. private and voluntary) health-care organizations; reviewing complaints about the NHS when it has not been possible to resolve them locally; and investigating serious service failures. The Healthcare Commission's formal title is the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection.
